Corsendonk® Abbey Pale Ale
A Classic Belgian Abbey Tripel
Corsendonk Abbey in Oud-Turnhout, Belgium was founded through the munificence of Maria van Gelre, youngest daughter of Jan III, Duke of Brabant. You may recall that Jan I (Jan Primus) is today better known as Gambrinus. The monks of Corsendonk started a brewery in 1400, which flourished until 1784 when the abbey was closed by Austrian ruler Jozef II.
In 1906 Antonius Keersmaekers founded a secular brewery to revive the monks' brewing traditions. His award winning beers included Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), a pale, light-bodied brew of delicate palate. Antonius' grandson Jef now continues the family tradition of brewing this award-winning abbey ale, under license from the current owners of the abbey, who have transformed it into an international conference center.
Abbey Pale Ale, known in Belgium as “Agnus” was described by Michael Jackson as “Dry, with a great deal of finesse. A deceptively potent ale in the golden, “Triple” strength of Belgium’s Trappist monks. It has a very big head indeed - pour it gently - and a very clean palate, beginning with a dry, lightly citric fruitiness, and finishing with a distinctive and delicate, perfumy, hop character. Very light and fluffy in texture, giving little hint of its strength. This beer has living yeast in the bottle, and will evolve with age, becoming softer and cleaner.”
Corsendonk® Abbey Pale Ale will mature in bottle up to three years, becoming drier and developing a Brut Champagne-like character. Store at cellar temperature and serve lightly chilled—about 50°F—and enjoy it as an aperitif and with a wide variety of dishes. Suggested food pairings.
